Galt is the largest and oldest of the three towns that became Cambridge, built up from the Grand River in the 1800s with a downtown of limestone and brick along Main and Water Streets and residential streets that climb the hills on both banks — Dickson Hill, the streets off Blair Road, the blocks between the river and Cambridge Memorial Hospital, and the older parts of east Galt across the river. The housing is the reason people move here and the reason it takes planning. Two- and three-storey brick and stone houses from the 1850s to the 1920s with stone front steps, narrow staircases that turn at a landing, a low ceiling over the bottom flight, third-floor rooms up a stair narrower still, and door openings a few inches short of what a modern sofa or fridge wants. Downtown streets are narrow, several are one-way, and a truck's standing spot has to be chosen rather than assumed. Above the shops on Main and Water are apartments reached by one stair from the sidewalk, and around the core are mid-century brick walk-ups. Newer condos near the river and the newest subdivisions in south and east Galt off Franklin Boulevard, Myers Road and Dundas Street are the easy end of the range, with driveways and wide stairs. A Galt move starts with photos of the front steps and the staircase, a plan for the two or three pieces that will not simply walk out, and padded rails and frames on the route.
