Moving Costs in Cambridge, Ontario (2026)

Planning ranges for local moving in Cambridge and to Kitchener and Guelph in 2026, and a plain account of what pushes a moving quote up or down. These are planning figures, not a price list. Every move is quoted in writing after the crew knows the load and the access.

Moving in Ontario is sold by the hour: a crew of two, three or four and a truck, at an hourly rate, with a minimum and a travel allowance. Which means the cost of a move in Cambridge comes down to two things — the crew size the job needs, and how many hours it takes. The first is easy to say. The second is where every honest quote does its work, because the same furniture takes a very different number of hours out of a Galt three-storey with a turning stair than out of a Preston bungalow with a driveway.

Cambridge planning ranges, 2026

Planning ranges only — not quotes, not fixed prices. They exclude HST, assume a weekday move with reasonable access, and assume the house is packed when the crew arrives. Month-end, the end of June and Saturdays can run higher. Your written quote replaces all of this.

These figures are for planning in 2026. They are not binding, and nobody should give you a firm price for a move without knowing what is in the house and how it gets out.

What pushes a Cambridge moving quote up

The house itself, in Galt. A century home with stone steps, a turning staircase and narrow doors takes longer for the same furniture than any other house in the city. Pieces come apart, rails and frames get padded, and the awkward item is planned and carried slowly. It is worth every minute, and it is minutes.

The basement and the garage. In a Preston bungalow or a Blair farmhouse, half the volume can be below grade or in an outbuilding. If the walkthrough did not include them, the quote did not either.

Where the truck stands. A driveway is a few steps. A one-way street in downtown Galt, a townhouse lane a truck cannot enter, or a farm laneway the big truck cannot turn in adds minutes to every carry.

Elevators and windows. A condo or retirement residence with a booked, padded elevator moves fast; a shared elevator or a short window means a bigger crew or a longer day.

Not being packed. A crew opening drawers and shelves is packing at moving-crew rates. Pack completely, or buy packing separately the day before.

Heavy and awkward items. Pianos, safes, treadmills, a chest freezer up a basement stair, a workbench. Each can change the crew or the equipment.

Waiting. Keys on a same-day close in Ontario often come after lunch. A loaded truck and a crew on the clock cost real money; a day's overlap at either end saves it.

Winter. Snow and ice slow every carry, and steep stone steps in Galt are the worst place for it. Cleared and salted steps are a real saving.

What brings a quote down

Access at both ends. Driveway, booked elevator, clear path.

Everything boxed, taped and labelled. Closed boxes stack. Loose items are carried one at a time.

Sorting before packing. On a downsizing move, the biggest saving is not moving what is not coming. Decide first; pack and move only that.

Right-sizing the crew. Three people on a three-bedroom house is often cheaper in total than two, because hours drop faster than the rate rises. The quote says which crew and why.

Off-peak dates. Mid-week and mid-month, outside the end of June and the first and last days of a month.

Labour only. If you are comfortable driving a rental truck, a crew for the load and the unload costs less than a full-service move for a short local hop.

How movers in Ontario charge, and what to ask

A local move is usually hourly with a minimum and a travel allowance. Some movers quote a flat price for a written inventory, which is fine when the inventory is written. Either way, ask for the quote in writing with the hourly rate, the crew size, the minimum, the travel allowance, what counts as waiting time, how materials are charged, what the deposit is and when it is refundable, and what the mover's liability for damage is. Ontario has no licence for movers, so the contract and the insurance are what protect you. Consumer Protection Ontario explains what a written estimate should contain and what to do when a mover does not honour one.

Comparing moving quotes

  • Is the crew size stated? A low rate for two people can cost more than a higher rate for three.
  • Is travel time defined? Door to door, depot to depot, or a flat allowance.
  • Are pads, dollies, wardrobe boxes and shrink wrap included?
  • How is waiting time charged?
  • What is the deposit, and is it refundable with notice?
  • Proof of liability insurance and current WSIB coverage. WSIB clearance can be checked.
  • Has the mover seen the stairs? For a Galt house, ask.

Things that are not part of a moving quote

Clearing out what you are not taking — the basement, the barn, the old office furniture — is junk removal, a separate service with its own pricing. Storage between homes is not provided. Cleaning the old place is a cleaner's job. Long-distance moves to another province are priced by weight and distance under different rules and are not what this line books. The written quote lists what is included so none of this is a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

What does a local move cost in Cambridge?

As a planning range, a two- to three-bedroom house moved locally with good access commonly lands between $1,000 and $3,600 before tax, driven by crew hours, with a Galt century home at the upper end for the same furniture. An apartment is below that and a large newer house with a full basement is above it. None of these are quotes; a written number follows a walkthrough.

Why does a Galt house cost more to move than a Preston bungalow?

Stairs and doors. A century home's narrow turning staircase, low ceilings, stone front steps and narrow openings mean pieces come apart, rails get padded and every awkward item is carried slowly. The furniture is the same; the hours are not.

How is a downsizing move priced?

On what is going, not on the size of the house being left. A move that ends with a one-bedroom's worth of furniture at a retirement residence is priced on that load plus the packing hours. Clearing the rest of the house is junk removal and is quoted separately by a different crew.

Does the hourly rate include the truck, pads and dollies?

In the quote you receive here, yes: crew, truck, moving pads, dollies, straps and shrink wrap are in the rate. Boxes and packing paper are materials and are itemised. Check this line on any quote you compare.

Is labour-only cheaper?

For a short local hop where you are comfortable driving a rental, usually yes. You pay per mover per hour with a minimum and you cover the rental. For a Galt century home or a large house it is often not much cheaper, because the hours are in the carrying, not the truck.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

A planning range, yes. A firm number, no, because the things that move the cost most — the basement, the garage, the stairs, the lane, the elevator window — cannot be seen over the phone. A short video walkthrough is usually enough to quote properly.
