Moving Labour in Cambridge: Loading and Unloading Only
Renting a truck saves money until the day you have to fill it. Labour-only means a crew that loads and unloads properly, and you drive.
A lot of Cambridge moves are done with a rental truck from one of the depots along Hespeler Road or the 401, a borrowed trailer, or a portable container dropped in the driveway. What people run out of is not the truck. It is people who know how to load one, and friends who are still willing to help after the last time. Labour-only booking gives you a crew for the loading end, the unloading end, or both, priced by the hour with a minimum, and you handle the driving.
Loading a truck properly
A badly loaded truck is how furniture gets broken. The crew loads the way a moving truck should be loaded: the heaviest and most solid pieces first against the cab wall, tiers built from floor to ceiling so nothing has room to shift, mattresses and sofas standing on edge along the walls, boxes stacked heavy to light, and everything strapped in tiers. Upholstered pieces get wrapped in pads before they go on. Done right, a rental truck arrives in Kitchener or Guelph with everything where it was put. Done wrong, a chest of drawers rides on a glass tabletop for forty kilometres.
Unloading and placing
At the new house, the crew unloads, carries everything to the room on the label, reassembles beds if you ask, and places the large pieces where you want them. This is the more common half to book, because unloading a truck alone at the end of a long day is where people get hurt.
Containers and trailers
Portable storage containers dropped on a driveway in Galt or Hespeler are loaded the same way as a truck, with the added point that they will be craned onto a flatbed and driven, so the load has to be tight. Enclosed cargo trailers are the same job at smaller scale. Open trailers and pickup trucks can be loaded for short local hops, but the crew will say honestly when a load should not go on an open trailer at highway speed.
Pads, dollies and straps
Rental trucks come with a few pads if you remember to ask, and rarely enough. The crew brings its own moving pads, dollies, straps and shrink wrap and uses them on your load. That is included in the labour rate. Boxes and packing materials are not, and the crew does not pack on a labour-only booking unless packing is added as a separate line.
Stairs, century houses and heavy items
Labour-only bookings still get the full crew skill. A Galt century house with a turning stair and stone front steps, a Preston bungalow basement full of storage, a piano or a safe — all of it is planned the same way as a full-service move, with photos of the route beforehand. The only difference is whose truck it is.
Who books labour only
Three kinds of household, mostly. Young couples and single people moving a townhouse or apartment across Cambridge who would rather spend on a crew than on a bigger truck. Families arriving from out of town who drove a rental up the 401 and need it emptied into a house in Hespeler or off Franklin Boulevard the same evening. And adult children moving a parent, who have the truck and the time but not the backs for a piano or a loaded dresser down stone steps in Galt.
Timing with the rental
Rental trucks are booked in windows, and the crew's time is your rental clock. The usual plan is to have the truck at the house before the crew arrives, loaded in one block of hours, driven, and unloaded by a crew booked for a set time at the other end. If the two ends are both in Cambridge, or Cambridge and Kitchener, one crew can often do both ends with a gap for the drive. If the delivery end is in another province, the unload is someone else's booking; this line covers local labour only.

Frequently asked questions
How much is labour-only moving help in Cambridge?

Yes. Pads, dollies, straps and shrink wrap come with the crew and are used on your load. Rental depots rarely supply enough, and furniture that rides unpadded is furniture that arrives scratched.
