Local House Movers in Cambridge

A house move in Cambridge is decided by the house. The same furniture takes a different day out of a Galt three-storey than out of a Preston bungalow, and the quote has to know which one it is.

Cambridge house moves fall into a few recognisable types, and the crew has done all of them many times. The century house in Galt. The post-war bungalow in Preston or old Hespeler. The 1970s to 1990s two-storey or backsplit in the subdivisions between them. The big newer house off Franklin Boulevard, Myers Road or in north Hespeler. Each one has a different problem, and none of the problems are the drive.

Galt century homes

The streets that climb away from the Grand River in Galt hold brick and limestone houses from the 1850s to the 1920s. They move on geometry. Front steps are stone, often steep, sometimes with no railing. The staircase inside is narrow and turns at a landing, and the ceiling over the bottom flight is low. Door openings can be a few inches narrower than a modern sofa or fridge expects. Rooms on the third floor were servants' rooms or attics and are reached by a stair that is narrower still. A move out of one of these houses starts with photos of the front steps and the staircase, and a plan for the two or three pieces that will not simply walk down: a king mattress, a sectional, an armoire, a piano. Some come apart. Some go through a window. The crew pads every rail, newel post and door frame on the route, because the trim in these houses is the reason people bought them.

Preston and Hespeler bungalows

The 1950s and 60s bungalows and storey-and-a-halfs along King Street in Preston and around old Hespeler are simple houses to move on the main floor: one storey, a straight walk to the door, a driveway. The work is in the basement. Most have been finished and filled over sixty years — a second fridge, a freezer, a workbench, a bar, decades of storage. In a storey-and-a-half the upper rooms are under the roof with a steep, narrow stair, and a queen box spring may not make the turn. The walkthrough opens the basement door and looks up the attic stair, because that is where the hours are.

Subdivision two-storeys and backsplits

The houses built between the old towns from the 1970s to the 1990s are conventional, with a driveway that takes the truck and stairs that a mattress fits. Backsplits have four short flights and a lot of landings, which is slower than it looks. Volume is the variable: a four-bedroom with a finished basement, a double garage and a shed is a full day for four people.

Newer houses off Franklin Boulevard and in north Hespeler

The newest streets in the city have the easiest access: wide driveways, wide stairs, big doors. They also have the most stuff, and a lot of moves here are families arriving from Mississauga, Milton or Brampton along the 401. The crew can load in the GTA in the morning and unload in Cambridge the same afternoon.

• How many rooms, and how full. Photos or a short video walkthrough, including the basement and the garage.
• The heavy and awkward pieces. Piano, safe, treadmill, chest freezer, sectional, king bed, glass tabletops, a large TV, workbench, barbecue with a tank.
• Stairs and steps at both ends. Especially in Galt. Photos beat descriptions.
• Where the truck stands. A driveway is ideal. A narrow one-way street in downtown Galt, or a townhouse lane in Preston, needs a plan. Street rules are the City of Cambridge's.
• The closing. Keys on a same-day close in Ontario often come after lunch, and the quote says how waiting time is handled.

How the crew works a house

Runners down at both ends, rails and frames padded, beds apart, mirrors and glass wrapped, upholstery in pads before it leaves the room. The awkward piece goes first, while the crew is fresh and the truck is empty. The truck is loaded heavy to light, back to front, so nothing shifts on the 401. At the new house, boxes go to the rooms on their labels, beds go back together, and the big pieces are placed where you want them before the crew leaves.
