Guelph is twenty minutes north of Hespeler up Highway 6, and moves between the two cities run in both directions every week: Guelph households buying in Cambridge for the price difference, Cambridge families moving to Guelph for work at the university or the hospital, and students and staff at the University of Guelph moving in and out of rentals in the streets south and east of campus. Guelph's housing has its own character. The older neighbourhoods around downtown and the Church of Our Lady are built of local limestone as much as brick, with the same narrow stairs and small doors as old Galt, and the downtown streets are as tight for a truck. The Ward, east of the river, is older worker housing on small lots. The south end, from Stone Road out toward Clair Road, has grown into large newer subdivisions with easy access and big houses, and that is where a lot of arriving Cambridge families land. University rentals turn over at the start of September and the start of May, and a late-August move to a house near campus is booked early because the whole street is moving the same weekend. Street and parking rules in the city are the City of Guelph's. A Cambridge-to-Guelph move is quoted as crew hours plus the drive time, stated up front; the crew loads in Hespeler or Galt in the morning and unloads in Guelph the same day. Anything further than the western GTA, and any move to another province, is outside what this line books.
