Selling a house in Cambridge: closing-day steps for water, hydro and the move
On a Cambridge closing, the house, the water meter, the hydro account and the moving truck all change hands on the same date. Each has its own notice period, and missing one is what turns a smooth day into a long one.

Water: the City of Cambridge needs four business days
Water and wastewater in Cambridge are billed by the City of Cambridge through its Tax and Water Division. For owners:
- Selling: the registered owner applies online for a final water meter reading at least four business days before the date the reading is needed. A processing fee appears on the final bill.
- Buying: the new owner sets up a new water and wastewater account at least four business days before the date service is needed. A processing fee appears on the first bill.
- Renting out: the City keeps the account in the owner's name, but will send bills to a tenant at the owner's request.
Four business days is less than a week once a weekend or a statutory holiday falls in between. For a Friday closing, the request should go in no later than the Monday before, and earlier is better. Month-end closings and the end of June are the busiest times.
Ayr and North Dumfries are different
If the house is in Ayr or elsewhere in the Township of North Dumfries, water is not a City of Cambridge account. Contact the Township directly for water and wastewater changes. Rural properties may be on a private well and septic system, in which case there is no water account to transfer.
Electricity: GrandBridge Energy
Electricity in Cambridge and North Dumfries is supplied by GrandBridge Energy, the utility formerly known as Energy+. It asks for new-service applications to be complete at least 48 business hours before the date of possession. New customers use the new service application; customers moving within the service area use the moving within or transfer form; sellers leaving the area submit a moving out form with a forwarding address for the final bill.
The application asks for the billing name, service address and date, mailing address, whether you own or rent, contact details, any authorized representatives and identification. The first bill arrives several weeks after move-in and includes a one-time occupancy charge.
Natural gas, internet and the rest
Natural gas, internet and TV accounts are opened and closed with each provider directly. Internet installation often has the longest wait, so book it as soon as the closing date is firm. Home insurance on the new house should start on the closing date, not the day you move in.
Your ID: 6 days and 30 days
Ontario requires you to update the address on your driver's licence and vehicle permit within 6 days of moving, and your health card within 30 days. Changes are free and most can be done online through ServiceOntario. A photo health card that shows your address needs an in-person visit.
How keys and trucks line up on closing day
On a typical Ontario closing, the buyer's lawyer transfers the funds and registers the transfer, the seller's lawyer confirms, and then the keys are released. That often happens in the afternoon, and it can run later if a lender or a lawyer in the chain is slow. The seller has to be out by the time the keys are released. The buyer cannot get in until then.
That shapes the move:
- Sellers load in the morning. Have everything packed the night before so the truck can leave the old house on time.
- Buyers plan for waiting. If the truck is loaded and the keys are not yet released, the crew waits. Waiting time is charged at the crew's hourly rate and is stated on the written quote in advance.
- Consider closing a day earlier than you move. Buyers who can get possession the day before their own sale closes avoid the waiting altogether.
- Chained closings, where you sell and buy on the same date, carry the most risk. Ask your lawyer what time funds are usually available and plan the unload for late afternoon.
House-specific things to check in Cambridge
- Galt century homes: narrow stairs and front doors often mean furniture comes apart. Allow for that time on moving day, and measure the new house's doors and stairs before you buy large pieces for it.
- Preston and Hespeler bungalows: a finished basement can hold as much as the main floor. Include it in the walkthrough so the quote is right.
- Newer houses in north Hespeler and along Franklin Boulevard: larger volume and longer carries from the back of the house. Two trucks may be needed.
